 The Viper 640 is a decade old design which is now just coming into its’ own as a the sportboat of choice for many one design sailors. The Brian Bennett design is now being produced by Rondar Boats and, with their strong backing, has grown into a very viable one design class. Strong grass roots support has shown the Viper 640 grow in many areas including the Southeast, New England, Texas and Long Island Sound and with nearly 40 boats expected at Charleston Race Week in April 2009 it has obviously caught the attention of many performance minded racers.
North Sails involvement with the Viper 640 began over a decade ago and, with the recent resurgence of active fleets, North Sails position as the most experienced Viper 640 sailmaker has begun, once again, to show it’s mark. By actively racing in the class we have once again refined our designs and tuning to match the updated carbon rig and keel configuration to make it easier to get the boat tuned up and going fast!!

NORTH
VIPER MAINSAIL
 The 2009 Viper 640 mainsail has been designed to take advantage of a tuning system that emphasizes simplicity while optimizing speed! The OEM supplied sails require an extreme amount of prebend to get near their designed shape our main requires only 1”-3” of prebend. This shape enables you to chock the mast in light air to induce the proper amount of headstay sag while enabling you to block the mast back in fresher breezes to straighten the headstay and allow optimal use of vang sheeting.
Our 2009 design has other new features as well including optimizing the batten positions on the full length battens enabling us to maximize the size of the sail at the measured girth points as well as relocating the jib leech window for better viewing of the jib leech telltale for both helmsman and trimmer.
The 2009 North Viper 640 mainsail is made from AP12-Pentex cloth. Unlike the OEM polyester fiber main, our mainsail has lower stretch which enables the sail to hold its’ designed shape better in stronger breezes while still being over 1 pound lighter than the standard OEM-polyester sail. Lighter, faster, stronger and more durable. All the assets of a perfect sportboat mainsail!

NORTH VIPER JIB
The 2009 North Viper 640 jib has been changed as well. To start we have lowered the jib clew so that the jib lead adjustment is more effective and each change has a distinct effect on enhancing performance. Also, our jib features a full-length top batten which helps the top of the sail twist more effectively which allows more control with the jib sheet and the ability to trim harder! Our 2009 Viper 640 jib, like our main, is made from AP12-Pentex cloth, which delivers superior shape holding, strength, durability and weight savings over the OEM-polyester sails. Combine all this with a design that features a fuller entry, flatter leech and a maximum length tapered bottom batten as well as additional panels in the head which assist in adding durability to the sails shape and you have a proven performance leader.

 The 2009 North Viper 640 spinnaker has been designed utilizing the knowledge we have gained on making championship winning sails for a variety of sportboats. Our first project was to maximize the size of our 2009 design which, in doing so, makes our sail class maximum size which is something that the OEM sails are not. Our next goal was to create a design that would twist and rotate better so that we could sail lower angles while sailing the same speed or faster. Our 2009 Viper 640 spinnaker enables you to do just that. Maximum size, lower and faster. The perfect Viper 640 spinnaker.
